Your First Visit to a Fertility Clinic: What to Expect
Booking your first appointment at a fertility clinic can suddenly make everything feel real. You may have spent months wondering why pregnancy has not happened, or perhaps you already know that IVF is likely to be part of your plans.
Either way, walking through the clinic doors for the first time can come with plenty of questions. The first visit is usually less about starting treatment immediately and more about understanding your situation and deciding what needs to happen next. (Source: MSDN)
Your Fertility History Comes First
Expect to spend part of the appointment talking. Your doctor will want to understand how long you have been trying to conceive, previous pregnancies or fertility treatment, your menstrual cycle, medical conditions, operations, and any medication you take. Age and family medical history may also be relevant. If you are attending with a male partner, questions about his health and fertility history will normally be part of the conversation too.
It can help to bring information about previous fertility tests or treatments, particularly if they were carried out somewhere else. You can also write down questions beforehand. First appointments contain a lot of information, and it is surprisingly easy to forget the one thing you meant to ask.

Will You Have Tests on the First Visit?
Possibly, although exactly what happens varies between clinics and patients. A fertility assessment may include blood tests to look at hormones involved in reproduction and ovarian reserve. An ultrasound can provide information about the uterus and ovaries and may be used to count small follicles in the ovaries. For a male partner, semen analysis is one of the main initial fertility tests. It looks at factors including sperm concentration, movement, and shape.
Not every test has to happen during that first appointment. Certain investigations need to be timed around the menstrual cycle, while others may be arranged for another day. (Source: NHS)
Will You Get an IVF Plan Straight Away?
You may leave with a clearer idea of your options, but a complete treatment plan sometimes has to wait until the results are available. IVF is not automatically the answer for everyone who visits a fertility clinic. Depending on the reason for difficulty conceiving, your doctor may discuss further investigation, trying naturally for longer, IUI, IVF, ICSI, or another approach.
If IVF is recommended, the results also help your fertility specialist decide how treatment should be planned for you rather than simply following the same protocol for every patient.
The Visits That Come Next
Your next appointment may be quite different from the first. There could be another blood test or scan, a semen analysis, or an appointment to go through your results and treatment plan. Once an IVF cycle begins, visits become more focused on timing. Ultrasound scans and sometimes blood tests are used to monitor how the ovaries are responding to stimulation medication. Later appointments may include egg retrieval, embryo transfer, and eventually a pregnancy test and early scan if treatment is successful. (Source: BFS)
You do not need to understand that entire journey when you arrive for your first visit. That appointment is there to establish where you are starting from. Bring your medical information, bring your questions, and expect to do plenty of talking. The tests and treatment decisions can follow one step at a time. Sources:
